Wooden Nautical Charts: Laser Engraved Maps of Your Favorite Locations

We first came across these Wooden Nautical Charts in 2012, when we were sent a Nantucket nautical chart. Immediately, we were struck the level of detail included in each map. Every area shown on the map was labeled, shorelines were portrayed with incredible accuracy, and depths were both labeled and laser engraved to visually represent the differences.

We learned more about the process that goes into creating each chart and learned that it all starts with a bathymetric chart, presumably from the NOAA's free archive. With the help of a professional cartographer, each chart is translated into a digital file. Based on the depths of each chart, multiple layers are laser etched out of Baltic Birch wood. The layers are then carefully glued together, with the water areas being stained blue to separate them from the land areas. The charts are framed in a durable, dark wood frame and covered ultra-transparent Plexiglas. Each chart includes hardware to make them easy to hang.

The final result is a truly impressive piece of nautical artwork. We've got a few of these charts hanging both at home and in our office, and they regularly are commented on and examined closely by visitors. It's a great way to show off a special place. And although we started with just the Nantucket chart, we now have over 70 locations available. Find the place you love and show it off with a wooden nautical chart.
